Noisy Bearings?
Smalley wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. Preloading will reduce bearing damage, wear, noise and vibration. The wave spring prevents sliding between the rolling elements. Bearing springs come in metric sizes to match popular bearing sizes. Smalley has over 150 standard springs available, from 16 mm to 580 mm. Customs are available for unique bearing sizes with No-Tooling-Charges™.

High-Torque Coreless Motor for High Precision
MICROMO is pleased to announce the latest addition to the FAULHABER DC motor series: the 3890 CR. Its graphite commutation, powerful neodymium magnet and high copper content in the FAULHABER rotor winding provide the compact 3890 CR with an enormous amount of power. The coreless rotor also ensures cogging-free, precise synchronization with very low energy consumption, making it ideal for high-performance applications requiring a compact, yet high-torque, motor.

Advice from a NASA boss: How an intern became Deputy Center Director
"It actually proved a blessing that I wasn't very bright," said Rick Obenschain, looking back at his 50-year career at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. It sounds like the punchline to an odd joke, but Obenschain means it. Officially retired on March 31, he was deputy center director at Goddard since 2007. Obenschain attributes his long career -- which began in the early 1960s when he got a job as a summer engineering aide -- to luck, chances given, and learning from his mistakes. In this article, Obenschain also imparts his Three Rules of Leadership and Four Rules of Management.

Scientists develop mesh that captures oil -- but lets water through
The unassuming piece of stainless steel mesh in a lab at The Ohio State University doesn't look like a very big deal, but it could make a big difference for future environmental cleanups. Water passes through the mesh but oil doesn't, thanks to a nearly invisible oil-repelling coating on its surface.

Mastering engine block 'peaks and valleys'

Dick Maskin started Dart Machinery in 1981 in a two-car garage in Oak Park, a Detroit suburb, and has grown it into a manufacturing leader in racing and high-performance engine blocks, heads, and other components. The company turns out about 8,000 blocks and 16,000 heads a year for drag racing, circle track racing, road racing, high-performance custom cars and more. Maskin says that advanced honing provides a key differentiator for maintaining a competitive advantage in processing an ever-changing mix of blocks.

Monitor engine oil condition in all kinds of machinery

Make interval oil changes a thing of the past using the new STAUFF Oil Quality Sensor (OQS). This unit monitors oil condition and can be permanently mounted within any lubrication system on nearly any type of machine, including: diesel and gas engines, compressors, industrial gear reducers, wind turbines, generator sets, hydraulic systems, and more. OQS measures the energy loss component of oil permittivity. All contaminants such as metallic particles, soot, water, oxidization, glycol, and particularly burnt fuel dilution increase this measured value. Data can be displayed on your existing system or on the STAUFF Oil Quality Display (OQD). This is an excellent way to build extra, billable value into your designs.

Slip clutches maximize designs

The way they see it over at Polyclutch, there aren't a whole lot of problems you can't solve with a slip clutch. Way beyond using them for overload protection, there are a surprising number of other applications for these versatile and valuable components. From increasing machine speeds and applying constant tension on wire to indexing a conveyor and automatic screw assembly, slip clutches just may provide the design leverage that you've been seeking.

Perceptron has extended the performance range of its HELIX smart scanning sensor with the addition of a high-power version, offering higher dynamic range. The new HELIX 200HDR sensor offers an adjustable power range up to the maximum permitted for a Class 3R laser. The higher power allows more complex measurement applications, including inspection of highly reflective metallic surfaces such as machined aluminum castings. The HELIX 200HDR produces a thinner laser line and offers a higher measurement resolution ideally suited for the inspection of complex aerospace machined parts and assemblies. The patented HELIX smart scanning sensor is used extensively throughout the global automotive industry for in-process laser scanning of car bodies for dimensional stability and gap-and-flush measurement.

Siemens develops world-record electric motor for aircraft

Researchers at Siemens have developed a new type of electric motor that, with a weight of just 110 lb (50 kg), delivers a continuous output of about 260 kW -- five times more than comparable drive systems. The motor has been specially designed for use in hybrid aircraft where the electric motors are used for high-energy-demand tasks like takeoff and climbing.

For latest exoskeleton, a spring is a marvelous thing
Biomechanical engineers at Carnegie Mellon University recently unveiled an unpowered exoskeleton -- a small, light, spring-activated device that fits on the lower leg -- that reduces the energy cost of walking by around 7 percent. The carbon fiber clamp-on device has no batteries and no motors, and uses the spring like a clutch.
