Image - Noisy Bearing??
Noisy Bearing??
Smalley wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. Preloading will reduce bearing damage, wear, noise and vibration. The wave spring prevents sliding between the rolling elements. Bearing springs come in metric sizes to match popular bearing sizes. Smalley has over 150 standard springs available, from .157 to 120". Customs are available for unique bearing sizes with No-Tooling-Charges™.

Say what? Drag can lift birds to new heights, Stanford researchers find
Future aerial design may owe a nod of thanks to five parrotlets flapping around in an instrumented flight chamber at Stanford University. They revealed that counter to conventional understanding of how animals and planes fly, the birds can utilize drag to support their body weight during takeoff and employ lift as a brake in their landings.

The battle of stainless: 303 vs. 304 vs. 316
Choosing the correct stainless steel material is critical to any application -- especially those designed for wash-down, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, or strength. There are a variety of materials to choose from, with many different specifications tied to them. But do you know the differences between the most widely used grades? Carlicia Layosa from MISUMI gives the rundown.

Image - How to avoid premature linear screw actuator failure
How to avoid premature linear screw actuator failure
At their core, electric linear screw actuators deploy mechanical technology such as ball bearings, ball screws, and roller screws that have a finite life. These components do not last forever -- even though that is the expectation of some customers. But how long will an actuator really last? Tolomatic engineers provide a way to calculate, estimate, and size the electric linear screw actuator to achieve the desired life for your applications.

SmartMotor with IP65 protection
Moog Animatics has just released their fully featured and integrated Class 5 S-Style SmartMotor with IP65 protection in the frame sizes NEMA 23 and 34. These SmartMotor products come equipped with industry-standard M connectors, as well as an optional brake. The S-Style SmartMotor servos share many of the same components as the Class 5 D-style motors, which don't have IP protection. This significantly reduces production costs and sales prices, resulting in an excellent price-performance ratio.

Spinning flare nuts eliminate loose fasteners in thin metal sheet applications
PEM SFN spinning flare nuts from PennEngineering become permanently captivated upon installation in thin metal sheets and, when paired with a self-clinching stud or other fixed externally threaded hardware, can eliminate all loose fasteners (including flange nuts) in attachment applications. These one-piece, flanged hex nuts additionally will spin freely in a sheet, enabling quick attachment to mating hardware. Their use ultimately promotes savings in assembly time and costs.
